Research themes

Physical acoustics

C. Glorieux, L. Kelders, J. Descheemaeker, P. Khurana

Our research in this domain is concentrated to material research, particularly to the sound propagation in porous materials.

Building and room acoustics

G. Vermeir, W. Bruyninckx, A. Dijckmans, G. Geentjens, L. Kelders, M. Rychtarikova

The main topic is building related research on acoustical properties of materials and constructions. This includes prediction techniques and subjective evaluations related to sound insulation, room and concert hall acoustics and recently also soundscapes.

Environmental acoustics

W. Bruyninckx, G. Geentjens, L. Kelders, C. Glorieux

In view of preventing or remedying problems of sound nuisance, the lab is involved in several studies regarding environmental noise produced by air, rail and road traffic, motorized sports, industry, dancings, neighbours, etc.

Photoacoustic and photothermal material research

C. Glorieux, J. Thoen, R. Salenbien, B. Verstraeten, J. Xiong, J. Sermeus, S. Creten

In this research domain, we study the elastic properties of materials through the analysis of the propagation of acoustic surface waves near an interface of two materials. Excitation and detection are all-optical.

Calorimetry

J. Leys, J. Thoen, C. Glorieux, P. Losada Pérez, C.S.P. Tripathi

In our calorimetric research, we use a technique that allows us to determine the precise temperature dependence of the enthalpy and specific heat capacity in different phases that occur in a material, specifically during a phase transition.

Dielectric spectroscopy

M. Wübbenhorst, J. Leys, S. Napolitano, S. Capponi, C. Rotella, C. Glorieux, J. Thoen

With dielectric spectroscopy we study molecular orientational relaxations in complex fluids, such as liquid crystals, glassforming liquids and polymers.
